Autumn Updates

Fall has arrived and the MMPRNT crew continues to sample at the Lux Arbor and Lake City Marginal Land Experiment (MLE) sites. Since our last update we have welcomed two new technicians to the team! Chase Kasmerchak will be working with the Tiemann Lab and Rémy Van Geersdaële with the Evans Lab.

Post-doc Yang Ouyang recently published a meta-analysis which examines the results of 47 field studies to investigate how nitrogen fertilization influences marker genes important to N transformation. You can read the article here.

We are also preparing for an upcoming all-hands meeting, where everyone from the MMPRNT group will share recent progress on individual projects and identify opportunities for collaboration. More updates to come!

2018 All Sites Sampling

During July and August, the MMPRNT crew traveled to all five Marginal Land Experiment field sites in Michigan and Wisconsin. Thank you to all the graduate students, undergraduate students and technicians who helped us complete another successful year of all sites sampling! Highlights of the trips included a visit to the mythical Rhinelander Hodag and a surprise appearance from a fawn hiding in one of our plots! Check out some photos of the trips below.

New Project Coordinator, Field Sampling, and Undergraduate Researchers!

The MMPRNT field season is in full swing and we have welcomed some new team members for summer 2018 and beyond. Holly Vander Stel joined us as our new project coordinator. She will help to coordinate field operations, data management and inter-lab communication for the MMPRNT project. Zahraa Al-Tameemi will be working in the lab and field as part of the Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship program. Charity Mackie joined the Tiemann Lab as a research technician.

Here are some photos from our recent sampling trips.

Zahraa and Corinn return from taking soil samples at the Lux Arbor site.
The MMPRNT team stops for ice cream after a long day of field sampling.
Holly and Cody sample soil and record photosynthesis data at the Lake City site.

The Evans Lab has also welcomed several undergraduate students for the summer – Sara (REU), Stephen (URA), Harry (REU & RA), Kisanet (URA), Audrey (REU), Shanna (URA) and Esbeiry (REU). Welcome aboard, everyone!
