2017 All Sites Sampling Completed

The MMPRNT field crew recently completed sampling at all six of the Marginal Land Experiment field locations located throughout Michigan and Wisconsin. Great job team! Special thanks to everyone at UW-Madison, Rhinelander Agricultural Research Station, Hancock Agricultural Research Station, MSU Forest Biomass Innocation Center in Escanaba and Lake City Research Center for helping to make the trip a success.

Diversity experiment started in greenhouse & welcome to new group members!

The Tiemann and Friesen labs recently set up a long term greenhouse experiment to look at the impact of of plant diversity and soil origin on switchgrass productivity and plant-microbe interactions. Check out some pictures below!

We’d also like to welcome a number of new technicians Daniela, Christin and Zhenyao that will be helping out with the MMPRNT project at KBS and main campus. The MMPRNT project also extends a big welcome to summer undergraduate students in the Evans Lab: Francisca (REU), Harry (REU), and Khalilah (URA) and Friesen Lab: Jon (LTER-REU), Brandon (SROP). Shaping up to be a great summer!

MMPRNT Group Meeting and Don’t Mess with Switchgrass!

Last Friday we had our group wide meeting which was held at MSU’s Agronomy Farm. The day was full of project updates and discussion about current and future work. See the photo of our every growing team below:

Cody has been leading efforts in the Friesen Lab to grind root tissue for elemental analysis and recently posted about a showdown between a particular root segment and the metal tumbler used as part of the grinding process.
